Senator Fred Thompson
Continuing a distinguished career across both public and private arenas, Fred Thompson was elected United States Senator from Tennessee in 1994 in his first campaign for office. In 1996, he was reelected for his second consecutive term. Once in Congress, Senator Thompson became involved with the reform of Congress, the balanced budget, and working for campaign finance reform.
He serves as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and in 1997 he was elected chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee. Under Senator Thompson's leadership, the Governmental Affairs Committee will pursue a reform agenda including increased oversight of federal regulation. Senator Thompson himself remains a leading advocate of smaller federal government by restoring authority to the states.
In 1966, Senator Thompson was named an assistant U.S. attorney, and at the age of 30 was he appointed minority counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, where he served in 1973 and 1974.
In addition to his public service, Senator Thompson has appeared in 18 motion pictures, including In the Line of Fire, Die Hard II and The Hunt for Red October.
Before his election to the Senate, Senator Thompson maintained law offices in Nashville and Washington, and he served as Special Counsel to both the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
