Scholars are actively debating the government's recent approach to antitrust enforcement.  Robert Crandall and Clifford Winston argue that the U.S. government's antitrust policies have not served the broad social interest, and that government should prosecute only the most egregious anticompetitive violations.  Responding to Crandall and Winston, Jonathan Baker counters that antitrust enforcement has been necessary and successful.  Gregory Werden, also rebutting Crandall and Winston, critiques their empirical analysis.  This section presents the research at the center of this debate.
